Common-mode chokes in boost converters

Did you know that you can use common mode chokes in boost converters (joule thieves)? Here is a circuit that can produce 5v from a 1.5v battery. The current is something like 20mA without and the output voltage is regulated.


Here is another example that uses BJTs only and a zener.

So... you do save these common mode chokes from old SMPSUs don't you?
